During Advent, Hallein Salt Mine invites visitors to participate in a child-friendly tour deep below ground. Franz Xaver Gruber or his son Felix, both of whom are portrayed by actors, will present their personal thoughts about the salt mine as well as the life and work of the famous composer. Together with a professional guide from the salt mine, these historical personalities lead the group through mine tunnels inside the Dürrnberg. All visitors will receive a souvenir photo, while the youngsters will also be given a small surprise to take home with them. This tour can also be booked by private groups.
2018 is a very special year for Salzburg and the whole world. It was 200 years ago that the world’s most popular song was first performed. Its composer, Franz Xaver Gruber, lived and worked in Hallein for 28 years and, naturally, he also visited the mine in person, attested to by an entry in the guestbook. What few people know, however: The composer’s estate was stored in Hallein Salt Mine during World War II in order to protect it from Allied bombing. Sadly, in the confusion of wartime the Nativity scene which he had built with his own hands disappeared without a trace. However, thanks to detailed descriptions and sketches, a replica of that crèche has been made in honor of this anniversary year and will be presented to the public during tours of the salt mine.
