What are cookies?
Cookies are text files that store information about website visitors on the visitor’s computer. If the user returns to the site (e.g. to the online shop), the cookies may direct the user to pages/information that is personally relevant to them. This increases user-friendliness enormously, since website content is tailored specifically to the interests of the user.
What privacy guidelines apply to cookies?
If cookies can establish a connection to specific persons, such as by email address, user name, IP address etc., the website operator must comply with data privacy laws, including data-privacy provisions of the Austrian Telecommunication Act (“TKG”, § 96 par. 3).
Frequently Used Cookies:
Session Cookies are cookies that are stored for a specific period of time. They are automatically deleted at the conclusion of a session when you close your browser window.
Persistent Cookies, in contrast, are only deleted after a specific period of time.
First-Party Cookies are cookies that are placed on your computer by the operator of the website you are using directly.
Third-Party Cookies are placed on your computer by third-parties, not by the operator of the website you are currently visiting. This might be linked to an advertising banner, tracking pixel, social plugins etc. This will create an "across-server session". The benefit of this is that Internet experiences and websites can be tailored/personalized according to the interests of the visitor.
