Hallstatt 7000: Live excavations at the prehistoric burial ground
Visit our excavations in the prehistoric grave fields. Scientists from the Natural History Museum in Vienna are happy to let you watch them go about their work and will tell you about their exciting research in the Hallstatt High Valley, one of the most significant archaeological sites from the Early Iron Age, which explains why that age is also known as the “Hallstatt Period”.

The Natural History Museum Vienna and the Salzwelten Hallstatt invite you to the annual Open House weekend.
Around the "“Alte Schmiede“, the external branch of the Natural History Museum Vienna on the Hallstatt Salt Mountain, numerous stations present fascinating facts and the latest archaeological research findings. Exciting hands-on activities for both young and old invite visitors to get involved.
Once again this year, selected finds from the 2025 excavation season will be presented directly on-site!

Together with archaeologists, away from the regular tour route, inside the world's oldest salt mine. The Prehistoric Expedition makes it possible!
This 4-hours insider tour is suitable for ages 10 and older and demands a basic level of physical fitness.
